Open Position at Goodman Theatre: House Carpenter


Goodman Theatre seeks a staff House Carpenter to work under the supervision of the Production Manager and Technical Director to oversee backstage operations, maintenance, and repair of productions in the Albert Theatre.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: maintaining a clean and safe backstage area. Serve as the Albert Theatre crew chief and supervise technical rehearsal and performance calls in the preparation and running of shows, including scene changes involving movement of furniture, set pieces and properties. (Scene changes may include operation of scenery automation systems, fly system, physically picking up or maneuvering an item or any combination of the above, either backstage or in full view of the audience.) Consistently reproduce technical accuracy in all performance related duties. Maintain and repair the physical equipment related to show operation after the opening performance, including appearance of set, by making repairs and consulting with scene shop as necessary. Consult with designers and/or supervisors on specific solutions to problems. Maintain an inventory and stock supplies for the backstage and rigging room. Attend meetings and rehearsals as requested. Train and supervise any additional Albert Theatre stagehands and stage crew. Perform additional duties as required.

The candidate must have a minimum of four years professional with two years supervisory experience, and be able to successfully manage a run crew. Must have a background in technical theatre with a broad experience in backstage procedures and use of backstage equipment, including a basic knowledge of scenic construction, metalworking, rigging, tools and theatre products, with an operating knowledge of scenery automation systems and fly system. Ability to repeatedly lift, push, or maneuver up to 50-70 lbs, either alone or with assistance from others. Climbing ladders and working in high places. Work as a team member, maintaining a positive attitude in times of stress. The job is a full-time, union position under the Goodman's collective bargaining agreement with I.A.T.S.E. Local 2, with a full benefits package.
